Moving can be a lot to think about. Below is a checklist of some things to keep in mind:
- Get a home insurance
- Create an inspection protocol
- Write a list of questions for the landlord
- Download templates
Get a home insurance
It is essential to have a valid home insurance. As a tenant, you should sign up for home insurance at your new address, regardless of whether the landlord has one or not. If the property is furnished, you should also have additional insurance for personal belongings and all risks. There is a risk that the landlord's home insurance does not cover you, your belongings, or damages for which you are deemed responsible, which could be very costly.
Create an inspection protocol
It is important to ensure that you and the landlord agree on the condition of the property on the day you move in. If this is not documented and signed by both parties, it could lead to unnecessary disputes upon move-out.
At the bottom of this page, you can download a template for the inventory list and inspection report that can facilitate the process.
Write a list of questions for the landlord
There are many things that the landlord might not think to mention as important information during a move. Therefore, it might be a good idea to prepare a list of questions for the landlord to go through during the key handover. These questions could be about the property, the area, or the neighbors. Examples of questions to ask:
- Where is the fuse box located?
- Informal rules in the laundry room?
- Any neighbor who complains if there's too much noise?
- Nearest/best grocery store?
- Any handy neighbor to contact if something happens?
- Contact information for the housing association/landlord in case of an emergency?
